Just over 2,000 years ago, this day, the Holy Spirit of God invaded an upper room where Jesus’ first and most devoted followers had gathered. The book of Acts records the arrival of the Holy Ghost as “a mighty rushing wind” — with “cloven tongues like as of fire” resting upon everyone present.
For the Hebrew people, Shavu’ot — the Feast of Weeks, Pentecost — is the second commanded “pilgrimage feast” when God’s people from all over the world — each with their own language and heritage — made their way to the temple to offer special sacrifices in the presence of the God who promised to always be with them.
Of course, your Bible tells us the source of those languages, before Jesus was crucified, before He was risen from the dead, before He ascended to the Father, before He sent the Holy Spirit to humanity.
Way, way back in Genesis 11, at the tower of Babel, God saw man’s rebellion … their intention to rule without Him, according to their own designs and devices. In response, the Lord Almighty confused mankind’s languages to divide us so that we could not operate as one.
Genesis 11:6 tells us,
“The LORD said, ‘If as one people speaking the same language they have begun to do this, then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them.'”
Thank GOD for Pentecost — the day everything changed! Those who had sold-out for the Lord Jesus Christ received a divine reversal of Babel’s division and by the power of the Holy Spirit, begin to operate in new languages … “the tongues of men and the tongues of angels” as the Apostle Paul said it … so that all those who are gathered in Jerusalem for the feast could hear the message of God’s Messiah in their own tongue and unite in self-giving and self-sacrificing love for others.
“But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you shall be My witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”
When you’re empowered by the Holy Spirit, it’s easy to feel a calling “to the ends of the earth.” We can — and we should — focus there. But we cannot overlook our “Jerusalem … Judea … and Samaria.”
The FIRST place the work of the Holy Spirit should begin to become evident is in YOUR life … in you, right where you are. Then in your family, then in your neighbourhood, your city, your nation and moving outward as we — together and by His grace — preach the glorious Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ “to the ends of the earth.”
MY MESSAGE TO YOU IS SIMPLE – just hold on. Stay faithful to the commands of the Lord. Don’t get caught up in the tensions perpetuated by the culture. Love one another as Christ loved us. Gather with one heart — crossing every socioeconomic, racial and even language boundary — to seek the Lord “in spirit and in truth.”
As we do that, I believe the Spirit of REVIVAL and AWAKENING is about to sweep across our nation as we seek Him with all our hearts!
MAY GOD BLESS ALL OUR CCC MEMBERS ON THIS WONDERFUL PENTECOST SUNDAY!
